We make mistakes
but we don't waste mistakes

So these knits are not fully organic. And we’re not perfect. But we’re fully working on it.

Sustainability is survival. It’s literally the most important thing in the world so when we make a mistake it truly pisses us off. And we just made one. Some wool knits from our current collection are made of conventional wool and are as good as any other conventional product out there but are non-organic. As organic is and has always been our DNA, this is a big issue for us.

Ok what happened?

It started out good. We work with a specific partner in Patagonia to source the most sustainable and animal-friendly wool in the world. This wool is certified according to the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), and the fibre level reaches the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS). So it’s as good as can be for ecosystems.
However, our monitoring was slightly too slow and products with the ‘wrong’ i.e. non-organic virgin wool have already been produced.

What are we not going to do?

Obviously, we’re not hiding this from anyone - selling without telling is against everything we believe in. This organic supply chain issue has gotten our morals in a twist but we don’t want to waste these knits. We may make mistakes. But we don’t waste mistakes. The planet needs a lot of things right now, but more waste isn’t one of them. We’re also not going to ‘recycle’ these new products back into other products, claiming the material as ‘recycled’ as, well that’s just nonsense, ecologically.

The plan.

At ARMEDANGELS there is only one way, being explicitly honest and making the best of it. So we will continue to sell these pieces, while making it clear that they are unfortunately not as organic as they should be. We will also invest the profit made in a long-term solution to ensure this never happens again.
Of course, it will be possible to return the products if anyone feels uncomfortable with them.

How do we not make the same mistake again?

We have tightened our checking process and set up a traceability certificate system already. And we will invest the profit made from the affected styles into digital monitoring solutions based on a secured blockchain technology. We are already running pilots for this.

We’re not fully perfect. But we are working on it. We make sure things like this never happen again (or at LEAST die trying). Seriously though if we can’t find a solution, we will just stop producing this product. This is our promise!

Q & A

The affected products are made from a wool blend to ensure long-lasting quality. Our standard is to use recycled wool to extend the life of a valuable fiber that has already been produced and virgin wool from a partner in Patagonia to guarantee products without compromise.

Our ambition is to source the most sustainable and animal-friendly wool in the world. That's why we have been working with Fuhrmann S.A. in Argentina since 2015, whose sheep graze on open Patagonian land. Our sheep's wool is certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) and, at the fiber level, by the Responsible Wool Standard (RWS).

Through our monitoring process, it has come to our attention that our yarn suppliers have not followed the instruction to purchase only the wool we nominate and have thus purchased and used "wrong" wool in parts of our wool products. As a result, the supplemented wool, depending on product approx. 30-40%, is unfortunately not organic.  The products meet quality requirements but do not meet our sustainability standard.

Working with the right partners, especially in far-away places, is crucial for us. We have our own process that helps us to define our partners. We also visit our partners regularly and have a monitoring process. This monitoring was too slow.

We create a fair and transparent costing and from that comes the selling price. The quality of the products is as good as any other conventional product on the market and the difference in cost of that portion of the composition is slightly lower than a certified organic one, but it doesn’t impact in the total cost. This means that the calculated selling price is not lower.
